"Our results confirm that the estimated rape and sexual violence were formerly very far below the actual prevalence of sexual violence that occurred in the DRC," said Amber Peterman, principal author of the study.
The study collected data from 2007. But the study did not include sexual violence among girls under the age of 15 years or women over 49 years, also does not include sexual violence among boys and men.
"Although the burden of sexual violence among these groups is unclear, but analysis of 4133 records the woman who came to Panzi Hospital in Sud Kivu showed that six per cent under 16 years old and 10 percent over 65 years," according to the study.
