LA BAGNAIA, Tekertin.com - Libyan leader, Moammar Qaddafi, possibly injured in NATO air attacks and may have left Tripoli, said Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini on Friday (05/13/2011). However, a spokesman for the Libyan Government immediately denied it.
Frattini told reporters that he believed what he was told by Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli, the Catholic bishop in Tripoli. The bishop was preaching, Qaddafi may have left Tripoli and maybe even injured in NATO air strikes. "I tend to believe the comments the bishop of Tripoli, Monsignor Martinelli, which make close contact in recent weeks, when he told us that Qaddafi is probably (already) are outside of Tripoli and may also hurt. We do not know where or how ( he was injured), "said Frattini.
However, a spokesman for the Government of Libya, Mussa Ibrahim, immediately denied. "That's nonsense," Ibrahim said in Tripoli. "The leader in high moral condition. He was in good mental condition. He led this country from day to day. He was not injured."
About Libya's denials, Mr Frattini said he still believed what Martinelli said. In a separate interview published on the website daily Corriere della Sera, Mr Frattini also said he did not believe in TV footage that shows Qaddafi of Libya to meet with tribal leaders on Wednesday. According to him, the impression was not authentic. "I strongly doubt that the picture was taken on that day and in Tripoli," said Frattini. "There are many people in the field who feel the pulse of the situation .... Among the many people, I was referring to Bishop Martinelli, who had and still has strong links with the regime," he said.
He added, "International pressure may have led to Qaddafi decided to seek shelter in a safe location. I tend to think that he fled from Tripoli, not from Libya."
Meanwhile, an official at NATO's operations center in Naples reaffirmed NATO's stance that the agency is not targeting individuals in the bomb attack that hit the capital city of Libya. NATO also said it had confirmed the comment Frattini. "We can not verify because we (did) not track the movement of Qaddafi," the official said. "We do not have the strength on the ground."
Mailed from Rome, Martinelli's office said the bishop had left Tripoli to Tunis. Bishop itself can not be contacted. As a high Vatican official in Tripoli, Martinelli is in close contact with people close to Qaddafi. Italian bishops joined a Muslim cleric in prayers corpse Qaddafi's youngest son and three grandchildren who were killed in NATO air raid on 30 April. Since the commencement of NATO operation, Martinelli has been very vocal and critical of the military attack. He said many civilians had been killed.
